Floating SupportEconomic WellbeingLisa was referred to Nightstop in September 2006 after living in supported accommodation. She worked well with us during the period she moved into her tenancy and established her bills. She had a new partner and started to disengage, unfortunately falling behind with bills. Previously Lisa had always managed her finances reasonably well, so this new situation caused her stress and she began to attend appointments again. We started off by completing an up to date budget plan, then made contact with her utility companies to arrange a realistic repayment plan. I pointed out to Lisa that debt had caused her a significant amount of worry, and through discussion she was able to recognise the importance of maintaining payments. Several months later she moved in with her partner which led to a change in benefit entitlement. I guided Lisa through the process helping her to complete the necessary new forms. Lisa then separated from her partner, but was able to make the necessary changes independently as she had previously been taught how to do so, which boosted her confidence. Whilst receiving support from Nightstop Lisa had completed a course at college in accounting and after several job interviews was successful in finding employment. As a result of the budgeting work undertaken with Lisa over the course of her support she was able to make the necessary changes regarding her benefits and calculate a realistic budget plan incorporating new costs. She is no longer receiving support from Nightstop however maintains contact with staff and continues to enjoy her job. Enjoying and AchievingAnnie was first referred to Nightstop in April 2007, however despite the best efforts of staff only remained engaged with the service for three months. Annie was referred back to Nightstop six months later by Redditch Borough Council as she was still in need of support to maintain her tenancy. Initially, the immediate need was to address the levels of debt that Annie had accrued. She was referred to specialist agencies to help with this, and staff did intense work around her budgeting skills. When Annie had begun to resolve these problems, we were able to concentrate on her future focussed goals, one of which was returning to education. When at school, Annie had failed to achieve her GCSE's due to difficulties in her home and personal life, and had later become incapacitated due to depression and was consequently not motivated to return to education. These factors had resulted in Annie being reliant of benefits. Once Annie's level of debt had been addressed we began to look at the type of work that Annie would like to do. She identified that due to her own experiences she would like to work with young people facing similar difficulties. We started to make enquiries through the local colleges, and also looked into learn at home courses. We identified that in order for Annie to learn to the best of her ability she would need to be away from the influences of peers, who had in the past had led her into trouble. We took Annie to Fircroft College, which offered a long term residential course in Access to Higher Education. Annie was later successful in her application and is now residing at the college in pursuit of her future career. |
